Foreign Office, April 29, 1909. WITH reference to your despatch No. 435 of the 30th September, 1908, I transmit to you herewith a copy of a letter which has been received from Messrs. Pauling,* relative to the contract entered into between that firm and his Excellency Tang Shao- vi, on behalf of the Chinese Government, for the survey and construction of a railway from Chinchow to Taonanfu.

I request that you will render Lord french, Messrs. Pauling's representative at Peking, all the assistance you properly can in connection with this contract.
